This excerpt takes place after Rafael has already made it clear he doesn't want her to see another man who obviously has the hots for her. She has just returned to the pier and the very same guy is on her boat. But she sees Rafael waiting for her on shore and dreads what he will say.
Chloe ground her back teeth together. She took a breath and began gathering her things. She packed her thermos and cup in the empty lunch tote and searched for her keys. When she turned around, Raffy was leaning into the cabin.
“Don’t say it.” She exhaled and shook her head. “I know what you’re thinking but please don’t say it.”
Raffy held onto the top of the door frame. His lips twitched, quirking his dimples. “And what am I allowed to say?”
“How about, ‘hi honey. How was your day’?”
He tilted his head, fixing her with a penetrating gaze. “Hi baby. How was your day?”
She edged closer to where he stood, filling the narrow portal. “My day was pretty good. Oh, by the way, Mack decided not to show up and he sent Zach in his place. Didn’t tell me about it, but Zach did okay. He used to work for my father, you know?”
He stared down at her, his gaze gliding over her face. “I know.”
She raised her chin and stood on tiptoe to kiss him. “How was your day?”
“Pretty good. I found two mutilated bodies on the beach, probably linked to another of your admirers, Manuel Cruz. Other than that it was a great day. I was looking forward to picking you up and taking you to dinner. Imagine my surprise when I find out you spent the day with some half-naked guy. I thought you agreed not to see him anymore.”
“Was he half-naked? I didn’t notice. I only have eyes for you.”
“Really?” he breathed, sarcasm dripping from his voice.
“Yes, really. And I prefer you totally naked any day.”
“That can be arranged.” He reached back over his head and stripped off his tee-shirt.
“Oh, my.” Her gaze skimmed over his wide, muscled chest and well-developed arms. “Does this mean that I’m not getting dinner?”
The little smirk he’d been wearing from the moment he’d spotted Zach on board her boat, spread into a wide grin. “You’re getting dinner, all right, but I’m going to start with a little appetizer.”
Chloe giggled. “You look like you’re hungry.” She reached out to touch his chest, letting her fingertips trail lightly over his skin.
“Starving. I haven’t had a bite since this morning.” He backed her into the cabin.
“You did seem to enjoy that.”
“Yes, I did. In fact, I could just re-heat the same little dish and be perfectly satisfied.”
