Enjoy an excerpt from BAD MEDICINE
Chloe has returned to the Texas coast for her slain father's funeral. Afterwards. Rafael, her high-school sweetheart, has taken her for a drive down by the jetties.
“Raising Lacy,” she said. “And bartending at night. I have a neighbor who sits for me back in Tucson.”
He tried to edit the thousand questions racing through his mind. “Do you ever think of home?”
“Here? No, never.” She gave him a long look. “I think of you once and a while.”
“Thank you for that.” He swallowed down something that tasted like unshed tears and took a step closer to clasp her hand again. “You didn’t have to leave, Chloe. I would have stood by you.”
She took a breath and looked down at the glistening rock beneath her feet. “It was time. I never fit in here.”
“I wish you’d consider staying on for a while. I’d love to show you that things can be different for us now.”
She turned to face him, a little catch in her voice. “Did you ever think about leaving? This isn’t the center of the universe, you know.”
“I never had any reason to leave. No place to go and no one to go with me.”
She considered a moment. “When I get back home, maybe you’ll come to see us...Lacy and me. Tucson isn’t that far away.”
“I’d like that.”
He slipped his arm around her. “You’re getting wet. Let’s go.”
“I like wet.” She leaned into the spray again.
“That’s it. I’m done with your playing. Come on.” He lifted her by the waist and tossed her effortlessly over his shoulder. She weighed nothing, yet he felt he carried the most precious cargo imaginable. The warmth of her body crushed against him, spread throughout his being.
“Raffy! What are you doing? Put me down.” She clung to the back of his shirt with both hands.
“You’re way too argumentative today,” he said. “You should learn to pick your battles.”
When he set her on her feet by the car he half expected her to slap him or curse him. Instead, tears glistened in her eyes. On impulse, he took her face in both hands and kissed her lips.
Chloe drew back and stared up at him for a moment, then slipped her arms around his neck. A tidal wave of emotion submerged him in sweet reminiscence of things past; of the many times her arms had held him. When their lips met again it was like a jolt of electricity coursing through him, hot and dangerous.
The next moment they were inside the Escalade, in the passenger seat, fumbling with clothing. Her black lace panties landed on the floorboard and she was unzipping his pants. He caressed her silky thighs as she slid into his lap. “Chloe, I...”
“Shut up!” She ground her lips against his as she straddled him and took him in slowly, teasing him with her languor. Her tight, wet flesh devoured him, a human banquet prepared for her pleasure. A soft moan escaped her throat as she settled with his length inside her.
She grinned when she saw his expression, a grin that told him she knew she still owned his ass.
